I felt it was refreshing to read this article, for the most part. It was good to see someone on a federal level realize that parents should be the ones responsible for keeping an eye on their children and their actions, and that the government not only has no place doing this, but, that the loss of freedom of speech is not worth the benefit here.

Of course, it was pretty saddening to see the following:

I find that to be fairly absurd. It is completely reasonable for the government to expect parents to be aware of what their children are doing on the internet, and in life period. The idea that bodies of the government think that they are more capable of monitoring my children than I am is flatly appalling, and woefully communistic and naive.

I say it is the parents job to control things as parents should do what they SHOULD do, which is parent. I don't think morals and values can be taught by the government, that is the parents job. I KNEW as a kid what was right and wrong (not that I always followed them.. flourisse/whistling.gif ), the government had nothing to do with that.

i agree that parents should be the ones to be responsible for keeping an eye on their own children. i don't think i necessarily believe in government (ours, in the u.s.) having a sincere interest in the freedom of speech and whether it is infringed upon or not.
if they were, they wouldn't be considering hate speech legislation.

i'm not a fan of either porn or hate speech, but one has to either be for or against freedom of speech, not somewhere in between, which seems to be the stance these days with many politicians and citizens. i won't be suprised if this subject continues to be debated, despite the result of any legislation, for a loooong time to come. i think, generally, that people want what they want and want to outlaw what they don't want and not only will they consider throwing out the baby with the bathwater, but won't notice that baby is missing for hours on end. dry.gif
