Been talking about this in the bloggie, as it has happened to me. Not everything, but a genealogy overview of my family from my dad's father on down.

Dad has been told that what this person has done is illegal, unless he would have asked AND gotten permission from all the still living people in the branch.

We've sent a letter with nine signatures under to the person just now, will arrive tomorrow. Wait and see what he will do.

In any case.. how would you respond when you suddenly ran into someone who put your info online for the world to see? Would you mind, would you not?

Needless to say: I DO mind wink.gif

in this day and age of stolen identities, i would be troubled by it, i think.
i've done online research about both my family and my husband's. i've never found anything for anyone to use or abuse, but i was amazed how many genealogy pages are floating around on the net. made me wonder how many people use the question "what is your mother's maiden name?" in order to retrieve passwords...

so much personal information is in computer records: financial, medical, genealogy, dental, purchase trends, etc. (i don't know what the laws are where you are, but here we have H.I.P.P.A., which are supposed to be a set of laws that are supposed
to protect privacy. what they really do is authorize medical information to be passed willy-nilly and shared for inter-disciplinary use.) for every form of security, there's a hole, potentially to be breached sooner or later. and a top of that, there's people, like the man that is using your family personal information, who use info for their personal use.

i don't think, all considering, that you could be too concerned about what happens to your family information. good luck! let me know how it all turns out!

I sure will let you know.

Genealogy over here is strictly regulated. It is never allowed to post information about a person online without that person's permission, so the law is pretty strict about that over here. Regular records here are never published online, and when they for some reason do get published online, whatever reason (be it theft or whathaveyou) then you are in your right to contact the isp of the site if you cannot find contact info and tell them to remove it.

Chances are not just the info will be removed then, but the user's site as well, and a permban for the user to that isp for breaking the law.

Thank goodness, I'd say.

The earliest we should get a response is on Wednesday, by mail, he will get the thing tomorrow.

I am very curious how this all is going to end up wink.gif smile.gif
